Sight words Game 3
New Game
On the blog today, a new Sight words game. I am not going to give away much. It involves a touch of crafting but is also a lot of fun with your little one. Sight words are great this time of year as school Winter holidays are almost upon us. So indoor Sight words games are just great for a rainy day like today.
Blend it up
Phonics to the next level
I could do lots of blog posts on this very topic so, for now, I have given a picture in the Phonics Development section. Once your little one can read and understand each letter of the alphabet, then it is time to move onto letter blends. Print the common letter blends poster to place up on the wall when learning. Letter blends involve taking two different letter together and bringing them together to make a sound in a word. E.g. e + a = ea as in beam. When learning letter blends, the first vowel is read. See the picture below to understand this concept a bit better:
The picture on the Phonics Development can be used when moving on to Level 2 of reading. Highlight the sound blends in words to clearly see the blends and make learning more fun.

Eating items
Fruit and Vegetables
Today on the blog, I thought I would post a delicious one but a good learning one. I found two beautiful pictures showing vegetables and fruits. But in the pictures are the Afrikaans names. Why not incorporate the next lunch or dinner items with a bit of learning? See below. I was going to put this on the Elke Dag page but I thought it would be great to put on the Home page for a change:

Story telling craft
Craft time
Today on the blog, I thought I would do a craft that will tie into Creative Writing. This week so far has been another great one with one of my students. I had the idea of what we will be doing for our last lesson for the term. We are going to be making bookmarks. I found a great one, have a look under the Creative Writing Development tab for an example. Below is what you need to include on your bookmark:
TITLE:

CHARACTERS:

SETTING:

Then the words are written like this:
1. Beginning
2. Middle
3. End
The bookmarks are great as it shows your little one the elements of a story plus it makes a great bookmark. So a bit of creativity is fun and also something that also can be taught. Don't forget to laminate the bookmark so it lasts longer.

The numbers are...
This last week it occurred to me that not all my students know what numbers are odd and what numbers are even so I thought I would search the internet for some ideas. Have a look at the Numeracy Development tab to have a look at what I found also some ideas on how to incorporate the idea of Even and Odd numbers into an activity.

How many...
Counting in Afrikaans
I thought today it has been a while since I have done a post on the Elke Dag Afrikaans section. There will not be many posts under this section but I still need to put articles up on this section. So how why not head on over to this section and learn all about counting in Afrikaans? Fun ways you can incorporate this is while on the way to school. Either practice orally or at home with everyday items.

Social Networking experience
This morning was 6 days since I have been on Facebook and Pinterest. Here is a report on how the 6 days went and just general information:
The first morning was a difficult one. I normally just reach over and I am on my phone. I always do the following: Check Facebook, go on Pinterest, add 10 pins to my "boards", check Gmail, check Google feeds for any news updates and then check the weather but this morning was different. I normally take much longer to get out of bed because of Pinterest and Facebook. But nothing interesting on my Google feeds and no new emails with regards to job opportunities so I just went back to sleep.
The mornings without my social media had made lazier. The next morning went just like the first and so did all the other mornings after that, so much for getting back into shape this week!
What I found come to realize:
- I depend on Pinterest for my job. Being in the educational field, Pinterest has such a big scope of ideas for worksheets, phonics development, reading etc. Navigating on Google to find any of this is a bit much. Pinterest shows the relevant articles you need so finding anything is at your fingertips. Pinterest also helped me find other things that are helpful. From Dinner ideas to Healthy lunch ideas, Pinterest possibilities are endless. I prefer Pinterest over Facebook
- I depend on Facebook for personal recommendations: Facebook is good for personal recommendations such as the best place to get your hair done or for home services. I needed a personal recommendation this last week and found Google, of course, was no help. I also depend more on contacting businesses on Facebook than calling the business. I realized I couldn't do this either. Facebook has a more effective tool when it comes to mass communication but also for personal stuff too. Where I do love seeing the cat videos being posted, I do like reading about my friend's personal achievements. Facebook allows you to get a glimpse of what is happening in everyone's lives.
Just general:
- I am not going to go on Facebook and Pinterest as much. Going to set up a time slot every day for times I will be on to limit the access
- Google feeds really never has anything exciting and is not as engaging but that is the news for you!
Maybe soon I will do another challenge. I have enjoyed this time and enjoy a challenge. Perhaps I will drink more water and see what happens, going to think of different challenges and take it from there.
Have a wonderful day everyone! :)
I will be back tomorrow with a new post on the blog.
Kind regards
Krysten
