Strong writing leads

(Talking) "Oh no! I have broken my leg!"
SOUND EFFECT:
(Onomatopoeia) "Brrrrrr!" rang the school bell
ASK A QUESTION:
Have you ever woken up and it was the day before?
ACTION LEAD:
(Exciting verbs) I jumped out of bed, ran downstairs and sat down at the breakfast table.
SNAPSHOTS OF A SMALL MOMENT
My eyelids slowly opened. The warm felt warm and I felt comfortable lying in bed. Too comfortable. I gasped when I saw the time on the alarm clock.
FLASHBACK:
(Describe a past event) I have only overslept once in my life. That moment in my life, I will never forget as it was the worst mistake I ever made!

I found these wonderful worksheets on how they can help students with their writing. Either you can make your own or use the printouts below. Simply Google Roll a story worksheet and all set. If you are making your own worksheet, don't forget to include: Character, Setting, and Problem. These worksheets can be fun but be sure to make sure students do start with the writing process and don't get distracted using the die. Below are my top three favourite finds from Google:

Creative Writing Story cards
![]() |
Something like this |
1. Who is the story about? CHARACTERS
2. Where does the story take place? SETTING
3. When does the story take place? TIME
4. What will the story be about? THEME
Print the different elements on the cards and laminate them. Have students draw one card each from each category and then let the students begin writing the story using inspiration from the cards. Stories are often funny as it is fun to see what different pictures are put together to make a truly unimaginable story.

Creative Writing Checklist
Go through each step one by one. Have the students remember the steps each time they write:

It starts with an idea...
Creative Writing can be a difficult process for some learners. Some learners take to Creative Writing like a fish to water and some take Creative Writing like a cat on a leash. Before you start introducing Creative Writing in the classroom or even at home, you need to introduce the Story Elements. Please see the picture below. This helps guide the child and gives the child a clear vision of what is expected in a story. Children who struggle to write or come up with ideas, give them a simple topic to start with and encourage simple sentences. Sometimes with these students that they have too many ideas and then with other students, there are no ideas. First, start off with suggesting the idea that if the child has a pet then you could write about that. For example, Dan the Dog. Keep the sentences short, simple and to the point. Children who battle to write also battle to spell so it is important to keep this also simple. For example, Dan is a big dog. Dan is brown and has white spots.
The next post I will introduce a fun way to assist with Creative Writing.
