Since we use these words frequently, it is best to start off with learning the Days of the Week and Months of the year first. I found these two posters that I suggest you use. Remember to put the English alongside it so it is easier to learn:

Understanding Afrikaans

BEST TIPS FOR LEARNING AFRIKAANS:
☆ First, learn the sounds of each letter as it is pronounced in Afrikaans
☆ Start with the vowel sounds
☆ Learn the basic words associated with the vowel sounds. E.g. Die a klanke: kat, bal, mat, dak, etc.
☆ Build up the vocabulary using the basic words
☆ After the vocabulary has been built up using the vowel sounds, start learning Theme words from English
☆ Theme words include: Colours, Days of the Week, Months of the year
☆ Introduce new vocabulary words once Theme words have been introduced
☆ Mix Theme words with new vocabulary words e.g. Die klanke woorde met ooi woorde. Mixing the words to make a sentence using the Theme words will be: Die mooi rooi rok
☆ Place vocabulary cards all around the house that way learning becomes visual and fun
☆ Simple is best! Start off learning slow, build up the confidence level when learning Afrikaans
☆ If you want your child to learn how to read in Afrikaans, start with a basic book or find a story that they know in English; find it in Afrikaans
